Today's Field Trip: a Fort, a Pier and a Cathedral

Today D. and I took a brief look at the unique St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco.

Then we took a walk along San Francisco's Municipal Pier at Aquatic Park, dodging a gang of Segway riders, all wearing fluorescent yellow vests, and avoiding the opportunistic seagulls hanging around the people fishing off the side of the pier. It was a beautiful sunny day. Mark your calendars!!

We then walked around for a while in Fort Mason, another little part of the "peace dividend." In use for over 200 years, the fort was a major point of troop deployment during World War II and the Korean War. It was the headquarters for the San Francisco Port of Embarkation, and over 20 million tons of cargo and more than a million troops were deployed through there. It is now part of the largest urban National Park in the world and houses more than 40 nonprofit organizations in its cultural center.

We took a walk through Fort Mason's park-like Great Meadow. We saw Beniamino Bufano's Madonna sculpture, protecting the children of the world. (Yes, the little girl has 4 eyes. All the better to see and protect the children of the world with, I guess.) In another area was a large statue of the late San Francisco Congressman Phil Burton. Burton's efforts created the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in 1972, of which Fort Mason is a part.

Then we found a secluded little cove sheltered from the breeze and sat for a while, taking in the view of Alcatraz, the Marin County hills, the beautiful Bay full of sailboats, fishing boats and sightseeing boats, plus lots of seagulls, some crows, a hummingbird and a sea lion.

Then I was very tired, so we came home.
