MVFD Training Exercise

MVFD Training Exercise

About three weeks ago the fire department held a training exercise around the corner at a house slated for demolition. A city council member invited D. and me to take some pics. Here's mine.

Training in progress.

Engine 6, parked in the driveway of the condemned house.

While the smoke clears from a previous exercise, preparation goes on for the flashover training.  Straw bales are loaded into an outbuilding and lit on fire.  It only takes 5 minutes for a small fire, such as from a cigarette igniting a couch, to reach the flashover point.  Firefighters from other cities are attending to observe the exercise.

The fire is a moment away from flashing over into an inferno.

And here are D.'s pics.

Sweetgum leaves have fallen atop firefighting foam on the sidewalk.

Hoses snake from the fire truck around the house to the outbuilding.

The hay bales in the outbuilding are ablaze, and the firefighters wait for the flashover.

We are not the only ones taking pictures and videos of the training exercise.

Every line of work has its hotdoggers, I guess.

All of a sudden, the space flashes over and transforms from a few flames into an inferno.  Even at 50 feet away, the heat is strong.

Putting the fire out after the flashover.

"Praying to the fire god," according to D..

I'm glad this was a controlled exercise and not the real thing.  Thank you, Mountain View Fire Department.

Video footage I shot.
