Sunday Bugs: Syrphid Fly

This is a syrphid fly, also known as a hover fly or flower fly.  Many syrphid fly species resemble bees but they do not sting.  Adult flies feed on flower nectar and pollen, and the larvae feed on decaying vegetation and sometimes on aphids.  They are good to have around in the garden.

This one here is probably Eristalinus aeneus, distinguished by its freckled eyes.
