Starr King Open Space

On Saturday D. had a photo shoot in San Francisco, and in the afternoon we spent a little while at Starr King Open Space in the Potrero to enjoy the views, and I took some pics there before it was time for us to leave for the Castro so D. could take his pics there.

A glimpse of Starr King Elementary School, across the street from the park.

The views from this hilltop open space are amazing: west to the Sutro Tower, northwest over the Mission toward Buena Vista Park, and north-northwest toward Mt. Tamalpais.

Autumn color.

A butterfly rests momentarily on the side of an equipment shed.

Someone has gone to great lengths to make this memorial out of a split log, whose message is now illegible.

A little Homer-Buddha contemplates the Universe on a platform on the hillside.

A rough-hewn bench catches the hazy afternoon light.

Overhead a ferruginous hawk (Buteo regalis) soars.

Two ravens chase a red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) above the hillside.

Across the street we see a colorful ladybug mural on the side of the Potrero Hill Health Center.

Yellow daisies and walking iris.

A peek at the back of Starr King Elementary School, across the street from the park.

A Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) butterfly pauses on a rock to soak up some sunshine.

One last look southeast toward San Francisco Bay before we move on.
