While watching the fireworks shows of 6 different communities from Sunnyvale's Landfill Hill last night, D. and I also saw a barn owl and some bats go cruising around as well, dark shapes in the sky against the distant lights of the cities scattered around San Francisco Bay's southern end. Very pretty, and more compelling than the pyrotechnics, in a way.
