Baylands

Here are some pics from a brief visit to the Baylands nature preserve on Monday, where, to be honest, there wasn't a lot that was all that interesting.

The ramp to the Adobe Creek Trail overpass over US 101 is criss-crossed with shadows.

The trailhead at the Emily Renzel Wetlands.

A hummingbird in the marsh is silhouetted against the low afternoon sun.

The marsh in winter is not very exciting.

Lots of ducks, mostly northern shovelers, swim around one of the wetland ponds.

Over at the actual Duck Pond (not the same pond as above), there are more northern shovelers, who feed by sweeping their bills back and forth across the water.

A ruddy duck pauses before diving underwater to look for small aquatic insects and crustaceans to eat.

A Cessna Skyhawk comes in to land at Palo Alto Airport, next to the Duck Pond.
