Lake Merced

Lake Merced

Here are some pics from a visit on Friday to Lake Merced.

A view of the lake, looking northeast.

A drinking fountain becomes an impromptu bird bath enjoyed by juvenile starlings.

This juvenile coot has something to say.

This adult coot keeps its thoughts to itself.

Duck.

Duck.

Goose.

Centaury grows abundantly at the edge of the lake.

This part of the lake is thick with tules.  In pre-European times, the Costanoan Ohlone Indians constructed boats from the abundant tules growing along the edges of San Francisco Bay.

A ramp to a fishing pier is lined with a bower of tules.

Water knotweed.

Common yarrow.

And now, a few short videos.  First, screamy cootlets.

Duck activity in the lake.

Cootlets vs. plastic bag.
